Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine is geared up to prepare the students to become Community-Oriented Physicians and thereby contribute effectively to the Healthcare system of Pakistan. This subject is taught during first four years of MBBS program and professional examination is conducted by the University of Health Sciences Lahore by the end of 4th year.
Community Medicine includes the study and application of a wide range of Social Sciences, Concepts of Health Economics, Human Behavior, Socioanthropology and Social determinants of Health and Disease.

The study of Immunology, Health Education, Reproductive Health, Child Survival, Communicable and Non Communicable Diseases, Health Information & Management System, Research Methodology, Epidemiology, Demography and Biostatistics is introduced at appropriate stages.

Emphasis is given on the Planning and Management of Primary Health Care System. Students are involved in supervised research work under the guidance and supervision of our staff. Carry home assignments, field visits to conduct survey are mandatory. Subject is taught in first four years of MBBS program during this period Formative and Summative evaluation is done during the whole academic years. By the end of academic year the student is able to recall his knowledge(C-1), apply that knowledge and have problem solving ability (C-3).

Most Modern teaching methodologies and tools are used. Emphasis is more on interactive learning and real life scenarios. The Department has staff qualified locally and from abroad. Further, the department has one of the most beautiful Museums among all the Medical Colleges of Pakistan. The Department has academic linkages with The Flinders University of South Australia & Johns Hopkins University MD USA. A very strong collaboration between Department of Community Medicine and World Health Organization (WHO) exists.

It is evident by the large number of WHO publications available in the department, Books for departmental library and visits of WHO focal persons to update students on the various Public Health issues. Guest speakers from WHO visit the Department time to time on our special request. They deliver lecture on various aspects of Nutrition & other issues of Public Health importance. Guest Speakers from WHO are qualified from University of Sydney, Australia and University of North Carolina USA.
